About The Baby Name Data on This Site

Our primary source of data is from an ongoing study published by the Social Security Administration. The study contains information about the distribution of names of babies who were assigned social security numbers. The name that gets assigned the greatest number of SSNs gets ranked #1 for that particular year. The name that gets assigned the second largest number of SSNs gets ranked #2 and so forth down to #1000. For 1990 to present the data is basically a 100% sample. From 1900 through 1990, the data is essentially a 5% sample.

The SSA makes two small requests of people that utilize their data:
1) Cite the SSA as the source of the information.
2) Acknowledge a few important qualifications.
View important qualifications about the source of the baby name data used on this site.

The data the SSA provides is in the public domain and anybody is welcome to utilize data gathered from their website.
